Summer is winding down and we are busy getting ready for September and school opening.  We welcome new and returning students, wish a fond farewell to those that graduated or moved and prepare for an exciting school year!
 
IEPs have been sent out to all families.  Please reveiw them, if you see anything that is confusing or have a question please do not hesitate to contact me.  Remember those documents are never set in stone, if we missed something, something changes or a concern arises we can always modify them!
 
A letter regarding 504s was sent out.  Please review that and if appropriate return the signed document in the enclosed envelope.
 
It is the goal of the Special Education Department to have all modifications and amendments addressed before school starts so that ALL plans can be in place and followed from day one. In the annual review meetings (last spring) some of you requested either a 5 or 10 week review of services.  You will be contacted regarding that review to determine if a formal meeting is necessary, or just conversations.
 
Please remember the door is always open.... you are entrusting us with your child and we want to be sure that we are meeting their needs to the best of our ability.  If at anytime you would like to discuss things please do not hesitate to call or e-mail!

What does this stand for?
Have you been in a meeting and heard initials that you don't understand? Here are a few defined...
 
CSE - Committee on Special Education

CPSE - Committee on Preschool Special Education
 
IEP- Individualized Education Program (not "plan") - An IEP is an important legal document. It spells out your child's learning needs, the services the school will provide and how progress will be measured. Several people, including parents, are involved in creating the document.
 
CT - Consultant Teacher - This is a service where a Special Education teacher goes to the class with your child and assists them.  It may be with notes, it may be focusing, it may be modifying the work or some other area.  If it is Consultant Teacher - Direct the teacher will be in the class with your child.  If it is Consultant Teacher - Indirect the teacher will work with the classroom teacher to help them with things for your child. 
 
RTI - Response to Intervention - Response to Intervention (RTI) is a multi-tier approach to the early identification and support of students with learning and behavior needs. The RTI process begins with high-quality instruction and universal screening of all children in the general education classroom.
