Building Project Presentation (10 September 2023)

Last night's School Board meeting at Schenevus brought forth an exciting proposal for a building project that could bring significant improvements to the school and the community. The proposal, presented by John Soko, consists of two main components: the replacement of the aging roof on the Draper building and the construction of a brand-new 200-meter outdoor track. These developments promise not only structural enhancements but also numerous benefits for students and our community.

The Roof Replacement Project: A Long-Awaited Solution

One of the central elements of the proposal is the replacement of the roof on the Draper building. This project has been a topic of discussion for several years due to the roof's expiration of its warranty. In response to concerns about leaks and building integrity, the school has taken proactive measures to regularly review and address any issues. However, the proposed roof project aims to provide a permanent solution, offering a new roof with an impressive 30-year warranty.

A New 200-Meter Outdoor Track: Expanding Opportunities

The second component of the project is the construction of a 200-meter outdoor track, a feature that promises to bring a myriad of advantages to Schenevus. Jim Catella from the Clark company presented the track's construction and location, underlining its potential as a valuable addition to the school and community.

For Schenevus's track team, the new facility will provide a proper training ground, enabling athletes to hone their skills and reach their full potential. Additionally, the track will serve as an ideal outdoor Physical Education classroom, allowing students to experience physical activity in an open-air setting, promoting health and well-being.

Perhaps most importantly, the track will be open to the community, providing a safe and accessible place for residents to walk and exercise. In a time when outdoor spaces have become increasingly important, this addition could greatly benefit our local community's health and fitness.

Financial Considerations: No Impact on Tax Levy

Jon Bick, the Fiscal Advisor, presented the financial implications of this building project. The total cost is estimated to be less than $2,000,000, a substantial investment in the school's infrastructure. However, residents can breathe a sigh of relief as this project will not burden taxpayers. The funds necessary for this endeavor will be drawn from the school's capital reserves, ensuring that there will be no increase in the tax levy.

As this exciting proposal moves forward, it offers a promising vision for Schenevus. Not only will it address long-standing concerns about the school's roof, but it will also provide valuable resources for students and the broader community. With a strong financial plan in place, this project will bring lasting benefits without increasing the financial load on taxpayers.

The School Board will continue to deliberate on this proposal in the coming weeks, and community input is encouraged. If approved, this building project could mark a significant step forward for Schenevus, improving the educational experience and enhancing the quality of life for our community members.

Stay tuned for further updates on this exciting development in our community.
